COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course is designed for sport divers with an interest in underwater archaeology and students of archaeology. All theoretical and practical exercises are guided and accompanied by professional archaeologists and dive instructors. In the theoretical part of the course, participants will get to know the most important archaeological sites of Calabria (Lokroi Epizephyrioi and Kaulon). In addition, they learn the correct treatment and restoration of archaeological ceramics at the NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF LOCRI. The practical part of the course deals with the most important methods of underwater archeology. At a simulated site, the participants learn different survey and documentation methods (position fixing, measurement methods trilateration and offset, drawing, photo), the setting up of an excavation area, the use of the dredge and the recovery of finds. Afterwards, the documentation methods are applied to a real site in the UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK OF KAULON.

PROGRAMME

Day 1: Morning: Introduction about Underwater Archaeology. Brief history of Calabria and Magna Grecia.
Afternoon: Check-dive and equipment-check.
Day 2: Morning: Survey methods, search with rope, marking finds spot (depth 10-12 m), position fixing with land marks, de-briefing.
Afternoon: Visit Locri Epizephirii (Archaeological Park and Museum).
Day 3: Morning: Finding finds spot, buoy with GPS, tagging finds, photos of finds with 1 m rope and weight, description of finds with numbers, record during post-processing, de-briefing.
Afternoon: Work on ceramics in Museum of Locri.
Day 4: Morning: Trilateration and drawing, de-briefing.
Afternoon: Work on ceramics in Museum of Locri.
Day 5: Morning: Use of dredge and recovery of finds, de-briefing.
Afternoon: Work on ceramics in museum of Locri.
Day 6: Morning: Documentation method on the Greek columns of the Underwater Archaeological site of Kaulon, de-briefing.
Afternoon: Visit Kaulon (Archaeological Park and Museum).
Farewell dinner and certificates.
Day 7: Morning: Visit the Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria, which hosts the “Bronzi di Riace”, two famous bronze statues (V sec. b.C.) found underwater.
Afternoon: Departures.

COURSE FEE: € 450,00 per person
Included in the course fee:
– Seminar fee and Certifications (by Italian Antiquities Service “Polo Museale della Calabria”, and by ISDA).
– Costs for 6 dives (incl. tanks, weights and special equipment for archaeology).

REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid medical health examination for diving
  • Opera Water Diver CMAS certification or equivalent

Nota: si specifica che per poter esercitare la professione di archeologo subacqueo occorre essere in possesso del brevetto OTS (Operatore Tecnico Subacqueo), non rilasciato dal presente corso.
